Cell Phones for Education

Boys & Girls Clubs of Albuquerque/Rio Rancho are participating in a used cell phone fundraising drive.  There is nothing to buy or sell to participate.  We simply ask that you donate your extra cell phones to our drive.  Most households have 5 to 6 unused cell phones just sitting in drawers.  Please put these phones to good use.  They will raise much needed funds and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the clubs.  This drive will benefit your child, our clubs, and also the environment by keeping the harmful materials (lead, arsenic, beryllium, etc.) that the phones contain out of our landfills.  Your donation is tax deductible.

Just drop off your inactivated cell phone with its battery in our specially marked boxes at either of our club locations.  No chargers or accessories please.  Donation forms are available at the front desk.

Ask friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers to donate their used cell phones as well.  Every phone helps!

NASA Space Camp

This is a free program offered to members in grades 5 through 9 starting July 20 at the Heights club and July 21 at the Rio Rancho club.  Registration is limited to the first 60 signups at each club.  New memberships welcome!

This will be a multi-week science program that will be "hands-on" with many safe experiments designed to teach children about space science and technology.  NASA is supplying the materials and funding for this program.  Our students will be given the opportunity to Skype with NASA scientists to design an experiment that may be one of 20 chosen to be launced on the sounding rocket from the Space Port New Mexico in April 2011.  Teams that design a winning experiment will go on to build it this fall (with NASA's help and funding) and will be brought on a field trip to watch the launch of the rocket at the Space Port.

Some of the topics to be taught include:  Microgravity in the classroom, Star chart and life cycle, Tetrhedral Kites, X-Gliders-Experimental airplanes, Water bottle rockets, Inertial balance, Accelerometers, Mars Rover drop, Mars settlement mission.  All of these programs are tied to state science standards and will be taught by APS science certified teachers.

For registration please contact your local club, or for more information contact our Program Director, Juanita Torrez at 881-0777 or email jtorrez@bg-heights.org.
